Day 46: The Matrix (1999)

Movie #23 – The Matrix (1999) - 136 min, cert 15.

Computer hacker Neo discovers that the world around him isn’t real, but just a computer simulation. A group of freedom fighters help him escape this virtual reality so they can stand up to their oppressors in a battle to free mankind.

I like this movie. I love the beautifully choreographed fight sequences in super slo-mo. I think the performances are great – Laurence Fishburne as a sort of Zen-master for whom ‘everything happens for a reason’, Carrie-Ann Moss as a leather-clad ice-cool warrior, Hugo Weaving as an impassive unstoppable machine, and even Keanu Reeves as he gets carried along in an almost constant state of confusion (actually that might not be acting).

It carries you along with the plot effortlessly, and the effects are pretty awesome.

Score – 9/10.

Next up is Hitchcock’s classic thriller Psycho.
