Day 52: Se7en (1995)

Movie #28 – Se7en (1995) - 127 min, cert 18.

Two detectives, one old and experienced, the other young and idealistic, hunt a serial killer who is modelling his gruesome murders around the seven deadly sins.

Any film that pairs Morgan Freeman with Brad Pitt has to be a winner in my book as they are both among my favourite actors. Kevin Spacey too, for that matter, and he does a great turn in the final act.

This movie is very dark. The urban setting is extremely bleak; what little colour there is is almost totally washed out, and the rain seems constant. Crime in the city is everywhere and even the police seem to just accept it. Corruption is everywhere, as there is always someone getting paid off – witnesses get paid to provide false statements, police get paid to give journalists tip-offs, the feds get paid to give out restricted information, and so it goes on. This is not a ‘feelgood’ movie by any stretch of the imagination, and the ending is a real punch in the stomach. Definitely worth seeing.

Score – 8/10

Next up is another feelgood film, It’s a Wonderful Life, with Jimmy Stewart. I think I’ve only seen it once, but it’s a lot of fun and I shall enjoy watching it again.
