Movie #29 – It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) - 130 min, cert U.
George Bailey (James Stewart) is a small-town businessman who cares more about people than profit. When a large chunk of money goes missing, it looks like the business will go under, and Bailey contemplates suicide so his wife can claim his life insurance. His guardian angel appears in the nick of time and decides to show him what life in the town would be like if he had never existed.
An enjoyable film to watch, this. It’s generally seen by most people as a Christmas movie, but it was never intended that way by Frank Capra, the director. It gets a bit corny in places, but it’s a lot of fun for the most part. Stewart gives arguably the finest performance of his career, certainly his own personal favourite, by all accounts. There’s no point me going into huge detail about this film because it’s probably one of the most widely viewed movies of all time.
Score – 8/10.
