Day 69: Citizen Kane (1941)

Movie #39 – Citizen Kane (1941) - 119 min, cert PG.

The movie tells the life story of fictitious media mogul Charles Foster Kane. The films begins with Kane’s death, and his dying word ‘Rosebud’. The media are putting together a newsreel piece about his life and want to understand the meaning of this word, so journalists are sent to interview everyone who knew him well in order to get to the bottom of the mystery. We then learn about his life through a series of flashbacks prompted by the reminiscences of these people.

It’s difficult to know what to say about this film. I wanted to see it so I would know what all the fuss was about. Now I have, I’m not sure I’m any the wiser. It’s certainly a pleasant enough film to watch, but I suspect that most of what makes the film great is only visible to people who know a lot more about the technical business of making movies than I do. So, I suspect I should just keep quiet and leave the analysis to those that know what they’re talking about.

Score – 6/10. I’m glad I’ve seen it, but I won’t be rushing to give it a second viewing. Sorry.

Next up is North by Northwest, my personal favourite from the Hitchcock canon, and the only one I own on DVD.
