Movie #33 – Forrest Gump (1994) - 142 min, cert 12.
The film follows the life of the title character, a mildly retarded man from Alabama, as he moves effortlessly through most of the major events in modern American history. Despite having an IQ of only 75, he has a remarkably successful life, due to his uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time, and extraordinary good luck.
I had remembered that this film was good, but I had forgotten just how good it was. It is a truly unique film. I can’t think of another film even remotely like it. The film engages the audience on every level, making what should be a ridiculously far-fetched plot completely believable. When blogging about The Silence of the Lambs, I said that Anthony Hopkins’ performance as Hannibal Lecter was one that has gone down in cinema history as one of the all-time greats. Well Tom Hanks’ performance as Forrest Gump is equally as good.
An excellent film, thoroughly deserving a place in my top ten. If there’s anybody out there who hasn’t seen it, you really should.
Score – 10/10 without doubt, 3rd in my top ten so far.
